Paul's DBS Diary: Part One

(Deep Brain Stimulation)

This week we have a special edition of the podcast with an update on the big adventure our dear colleague Paul Mayhew-Archer has been on. For months, we have been talking, both publicly and privately, about Paul’s DBS operation.

He has shared with us his hopes and fears about the radical deep brain stimulation treatment that Gillian Lacey-Solymar had some years ago. On the recent edition with our partners Paul’s wife Julie movingly shared her anxiety about the risks of the procedure while Gillian described how DBS had transformed her life.

Paul’s operation was scheduled for November 2nd and both he and the rest of us were keen that the experience should be shared with the Movers and Shakers community. So in the days running up to the operation he began to keep an audio diary. We had hoped that the last entry would come on the evening of November the 2nd as Paul woke up after the very lengthy operation to place electrodes in his skull.

It didn’t work out quite like that - as you will hear when you listen to the episode. No spoilers, but let me reassure you that Paul is healthy and in good spirits. He is hopeful that by the end of November he will be waking up after a successful DBS operation and he is continuing to record his audio diaries. So this is just part 1 of Paul’s big adventure - we will be keeping you in touch with what happens next.

In the meantime, you can read more about the episode on DBS here, where Gillian described her operation and introduced us to her surgeon.
